Plant Profile - Zamiifolia Zamioculcas

16th March 2015

                                                                 Zamiifolia plant

A long name so we call them Zammies for short, they are also known by their common name of Zanzibar Gem.

This is a  real tough plant that can survive on very little water. The leaves have an attractive high gloss finish and its striking architectural outline make it an ideal plant for modern offices.

Zammies are bred tough to survive the harsh climate of their original homeland and the sturdy stems and roots are filled with water. This enables them to endure long periods of drought in the rocky plains or at the foot of the mountains in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Malawi.

 Other 'Zammy' facts:

Thes stems are often used in floristry displays, as the cut leaves will last up to three month without water.

As well as being drought tolerant they can also stand being in low natural light locations.

If they're happy and well cared for they will 'smile' at you by producing white 'piston flowers'.
