Plant Profile - Sansiveria Laurentii

19th May 2015

The Sansiveria is a popular choice for modern offices because of its striking bold and contemporary shape.

The most popuar variety is the Sansiveria Laurentii which has a colourful variegated leaf. Other varieties include the Sansiveria Zeylanica which has a darker variegated leaf and can also tolerate lower light conditions. When choosing which plants to use in your office a general rule is; the lighter the colour of the leaf the more natural light the plant needs. Darker green leaved plants can normally tolerate lower light conditions.

This plant originates from the hot desert climates of Southern Africa and Asia and has evolved to withstand dry and humid conditions. It stores water in its 'succulent' leaves which make it an ideal low maintenance indoor plant and it is quite happy in dry heated / air conditioned offices.

Sansiveria got it's name from an 18th Century prince, Raimondo di Sangro from the Italian San Severo. Many people will also know it by its nickname 'Mother in Laws Tongue', this refers to the pointed tips of the leaves, which symbolises the sharp tongue of the Mother-in-law!

The Sansiveria is a healthy plant to have around as it purifies the air and improves the humidity levels.
